Ancient Comments on the Image

— Duke of Zhou

Wind, Thunder: Increase.
The exemplary person accordingly sees what is good and shifts toward it, has a fault and corrects it.

Judgment

— King Wen of Zhou

Increase: Advantageous to have a purposeful direction. Favorable to cross the great river.

Moving Lines

— Duke of Zhou

1
Favorable to employ for great undertakings; fundamentally auspicious, no blame.
2
Someone increases him; a tortoise of ten peng cannot be disobeyed, enduring steadfastness is auspicious. The king employs offerings to the High God, auspicious.
3
Applying increase to an inauspicious affair, no blame. Possessing trustworthy sincerity and acting in the middle, inform the Duke using a jade tablet.
4
Centered conduct; inform the duke [and he] follows. Favorable to employ as a reliance to move the state.
5
Possessing trustworthy sincerity and a gracious heart, do not ask—fundamentally auspicious. Possessing trustworthy sincerity favors my virtue.
6
No one increases him, someone strikes him; establishing the heart is not constant, disastrous.

Ancient Comments on the Moving Lines

— Confucius

1
Fundamentally auspicious and without blame [because] below, the matter is not made thick.
2
"Someone increases him"—it comes from outside.
3
Using increase for inauspicious affairs—it is inherently so.
4
Informing the duke [so that he] follows, is in order to increase the resolve.
5
Possessing trustworthy sincerity and a gracious heart, do not ask about it anymore. Favoring my virtue: this is greatly attaining the aim.
6
"No one increases him"—this is biased phrasing. "Someone strikes him"—it comes from outside.

Ancient Comments on the Judgment

— Confucius

Increase: decreasing from above, adding to below; the people are delighted without limit. From above it descends downward; its way is greatly radiant. Advantageous to have a purposeful direction; centered and correct, there are blessings. Favorable to cross the great river; the wooden path then proceeds. Increase moves and penetrates; daily advancing without limit. Heaven bestows, Earth generates; its increase has no fixed bound. In general, the way of increase goes along with the time.
