之
zhī
Attributive marker; third-person pronoun; to go/arrive.
Meaning
- Verb of movement: To go, reach, or arrive at.
- Pronoun: Neutral third-person (it, him, her, them).
Grammar and usage
- Structural Marker: Links a modifier to a head noun. This includes genitive functions (ownership/origin), general attributive links, and acting as a bridge for relative clauses.
- Pronoun Position: Functions almost exclusively as the object of a verb; referents may be specific nouns or entire preceding ideas.
Distinctions
- 之 vs. 行: As a verb, 之 emphasizes the destination or goal, whereas 行 emphasizes the act of traveling/walking.
- Syntactic Ambiguity: In the sequence [Noun A] + 之 + [Noun B], the translator must distinguish between three possibilities:
1. Marker: "A's B" or "the B of A."
2. Verb: "A goes to B."
3. Pronoun: "[Someone/Something] takes it (之) to B."
History and forms
- Distribution: In early texts, the attributive relationship is frequently expressed without 之; its presence may be for rhythmic cadence or to provide specific emphasis on the link between modifier and noun.
- Readings: Fanqie: 止而; Tang-period: *jiə jiə.
Translator notes
If a passage is syntactically stubborn, consider whether 之 has been misidentified as one of its three primary roles (marker, pronoun, or verb) when it is actually serving another.
