Judgment

— King Wen of Zhou

鼎:元吉,亨。
The Cauldron: supreme auspiciousness, flourishing.

Moving Lines

— Duke of Zhou

1
The cauldron is overturned on its toes; advantageous to remove the blockage, obtain a concubine by means of her child, no blame.
2
The cauldron has substance; my enemy has an affliction, unable to approach me, auspicious.
3
The cauldron ears are changed; its movement blocked, pheasant fat not eaten; just then rain, regret diminishes, final outcome auspicious.
4
The cauldron breaks a foot, overturns the duke’s ritual nourishment; its form is drenched, ominous.
5
The cauldron has yellow ears and a gold lifting-handle; advantageous to be steadfast.
6
The cauldron has a jade lifting-handle; great auspiciousness, nothing is unfavorable.

Ancient Comments on the Moving Lines

— Confucius

1
The cauldron is overturned on its toes; it is not yet contrary. Advantageous to remove the blockage, for one follows the noble.
2
The cauldron has substance; be cautious of where one goes. My enemy has an affliction; ultimately without fault.
3
The cauldron ears are changed; losing its fittingness.
4
Overturning the duke’s ritual nourishment—indeed, how is that?
5
The cauldron has yellow ears; centeredness makes it substantial.
6
The jade lifting-handle is at the top; it is the joint of firmness and yielding.

Ancient Comments on the Judgment

— Confucius

The Cauldron is an image. Using wood to enter fire, it is cooking and nourishing. The sage flourishes in offering to the High Deity, and greatly flourishes in nourishing sages and worthies. Through entering influence, ears and eyes become clear and bright; the yielding advances and proceeds upward, obtains the center and responds to the firm—thus it is primary flourishing.
