Ancient Comments on the Image

— Duke of Zhou

Marsh without water: limited
the exemplary person accordingly devotes their life-fate and carries through their intention.

Judgment

— King Wen of Zhou

Limited: Coming through. Steadfastness, for the great person, is auspicious; no blame. Words are spoken, but not believed.

Moving Lines

— Duke of Zhou

1
rump limited by a tree stump, enters into a secluded valley, three years without being seen.
2
limited by wine and food; vermilion tassels are just arriving. Favorable to employ offerings and sacrifices; advancing is misfortune; no blame.
3
limited by stone, resting on thorny burrs, enters his palace, does not see his wife, ominous.
4
coming slowly, limited in a golden carriage, regrettable, there is an end.
5
nose-cutting and foot-cutting; limited by red tassels; then slowly there is delight; favorable to employ sacrificial rites.
6
limited by kudzu vines, in precariousness; it is said: move and there is regret. There is regret; setting out is auspicious.

Ancient Comments on the Moving Lines

— Confucius

1
Entering into a secluded valley—the secluded is not bright.
2
Limited by wine and food—within this there is blessing.
3
Resting on thorny burrs is riding firmness. Entering his palace and not seeing his wife is inauspicious.
4
Coming slowly—the intention is below. Although not occupying the fitting position, there is association.
5
Nose-cutting and foot-cutting: the intention is not yet attained. Then slowly there is delight, because of centered uprightness. Favorable to employ sacrificial rites: receiving blessing.
6
Limited by kudzu vines—not fitting the position. Move and regret, there is regret—it is an auspicious course of action.

Ancient Comments on the Judgment

— Confucius

Limited is the covering of the firm. Danger combined with delight: being limited without losing one's place—this is coming through. Is this only for the exemplary person? Steadfastness and the great person [being] auspicious is because the firm is centered. Words are not believed; valuing the mouth leads to an impasse.
