Above the marsh there is earth: Approaching

君子以教思无窮，容保民无疆。

the exemplary person accordingly teaches with thoughts without end, and accommodates and protects the people without boundary.

臨：元亨。利貞。至于八月有凶。

Approaching: Primary flourishing. Benefit in steadfast alignment. Reaching the eighth month, there is misfortune.

Mutual approach, steadfast alignment is auspicious; the intention's course is correct.

Mutual approach, auspicious, nothing is unfavorable; not yet following the mandate.

甘臨，位不當也。既憂之，咎不長也。

Sweet approach: the position is not fitting. Having already worried over it, blame does not grow long.

Ancient Comments on the Judgment

臨，剛浸而長。說而順，剛中而應，大亨以正，天之道也。至于八月有凶，消不久也。

Approaching: the firm seeps in and grows. Joyful and following; the firm is centered and responds—great flourishing by means of correctness: this is the Way of Heaven. Reaching the eighth month, there is misfortune; the waning does not last long.
