智
zhì
wisdom, knowledge, intelligence
Meaning
The semantic range typically falls into one of three poles:
1. Intellectual: Mental acuity, wit, or the raw capacity for reasoning.
2. Moral/Philosophical: Wisdom as a virtue; the ability to discern the appropriate from the inappropriate.
3. Strategic: Shrewdness, calculation, or cunning (e.g., "stratagem" in military or political contexts).
Grammar and usage
Primarily functions as a noun or an attributive adjective. It may appear in the predicate position via standard classical syntax.
Distinctions
Contrast with 知 (zhī): While 知 typically denotes recognition, awareness, or the acquisition of information, 智 represents the application of that knowledge—discernment and the capacity to process data into a correct conclusion or action.
History and forms
- Readings: Tang-period reading djiɛ̀; Fanqie 知義.
- Evolution: In early texts, 智 is often distinct from 慧 (huì), with the latter leaning toward intuitive quickness or brilliance. In later Buddhist contexts, these are fused into the compound 智慧 (prajñā).
Translator notes
When both 智 and 知 appear within the same text, a distinction is almost certainly being made between "knowing" as awareness and "wisdom" as application/discernment.
