察

chá

examine, investigate; notice

Meaning

Core sense is penetrating observation or scrutiny intended to reach a conclusion or uncover hidden facts. This operates in two primary registers:

1. Formal/Administrative: To investigate, audit, or inspect; implies official inquiry and the search for evidence.

2. Perceptive/Psychological: To discern, notice, or perceive subtle signals, discrepancies, or shifts in mood and nature.

Grammar and usage

Primarily a transitive verb taking a direct object (the entity or detail under scrutiny). It can also describe a mental state of alertness or the quality of being observant. In certain constructions, it pairs with 覺 (jué), which typically marks the transition from the act of scrutiny to the moment of realization.

Distinctions

Distinguish 察 from related glyphs:

  • 視 (shì): The basic act of seeing or looking.
  • 觀 (guān): A broader gaze; contemplating the "big picture."
  • 考 (kǎo): Research or verification based on evidence and records rather than observation.

History and forms

Semantic variant: U+8A67. The glyph 查 is often interchangeable in later texts. In earlier layers, a distinction may exist between a general search/check (查) and deep scrutiny (察), though this is frequently stylistic.

Translator notes

The glyph carries an inherent tension between insight (benevolent understanding) and surveillance (suspicious investigation). The translator should determine from context whether the gaze is one of empathy or suspicion.
