后
hòu
sovereign, empress, queen
Meaning
Sovereign or supreme ruler; later specialized to denote the Empress (the female counterpart to the Emperor).
Distinctions
In ancient texts, a distinction is maintained between 后 (referring to a person or title) and 後 (referring to spatial position "rear" or temporal sequence "after"). While these are merged in modern simplified Chinese, translating 后 as a temporal or spatial marker in early texts is generally an error.
History and forms
Pre-Qin / Early Han: A generally gender-neutral title for the holder of highest authority (Sovereign/Monarch).
Later usage: Specialized to denote the Empress. In later periods, this glyph may appear as scribal shorthand for 後.
Translator notes
When interpreting as "Sovereign," the emphasis is on authority and rule. When interpreting as "Empress," the emphasis shifts toward rank and relational status within the imperial hierarchy.
